Ready2Scale Spotlight: Meet BrachyDOSE

Over the past six months, the Ready2Scale Acceleration Program has empowered 15 groundbreaking digital and deep-tech startups with mentorship, resources, and a €60,000 grant to fuel their growth and amplify their impact. Among them is BrachyDOSE, an innovative company transforming cancer treatment with its cutting-edge radiation measurement device. Let’s take a closer look at their story.

BrachyDOSE is an advanced medical device designed to accurately measure radiation doses applied to cancer patients, minimizing the risk of radiation-induced injuries. The solution features a disposable sensor that streamlines workflows for doctors and reduces costs for hospitals. Applicable to all cancer tumors treated with radiotherapy, BrachyDOSE offers a transformative approach to enhancing patient safety and treatment efficiency. The insights are shared by Neringa Šeperienė, co-founder and CEO of the company.

How did you come up with the idea to create a startup?
While working as a medical physicist on projects at an oncology hospital, I discovered that doctors lacked accurate measurements for healthy organs during radiotherapy. While they had all the necessary knowledge for treating tumors, they were missing data to protect surrounding organs from radiation. My team and I decided to address this issue by engineering a radiation sensor specifically designed for radiotherapy procedures.

What have been the biggest challenges/failures and the biggest wins so far?
The biggest challenge has been securing finances to bring our product to market, as developing hardware medical devices takes more time than digital solutions. Our greatest achievements so far include securing equity-free funding of €300,000 since the start of product development, receiving support from BSV Ventures, and partnering with renowned hospitals like the National Cancer Institute and Heidelberg University Hospital.

What sets your startup apart from competitors?
We are creating the first disposable sensor that focuses on measuring data from organs that must be protected, rather than simply confirming radiation doses at the tumor site. Our technology delivers ten times more valuable patient data than existing solutions on the market.

Why would you recommend the Ready2Scale Acceleration Program to other startups?
Ready2Scale is an excellent program that helps cover costs that are challenging to fund through investor backing. For us, it provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen our intellectual property, receive meaningful advice from mentors, cover clinical work costs, and gain crucial connections in our target market, Germany.

Where do you see your startup in 1 year? And where in 5 years?
In one year, we aim to have our device implemented in all possible hospitals in the Lithuanian market. In five years, we plan to expand to Germany, serving over 200 hospitals and addressing a €300 million market opportunity. As a company, we will be fast, flexible, and dedicated to providing the most efficient service to our clients—hospitals.

Which books/podcasts/publications and influencers in your field do you follow and would recommend to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
I follow Bear Grylls, the famous UK adventurer, and I resonate with his adventurous and empathetic nature. I recommend his book Mud, Sweat, and Tears, which encourages resilience and never giving up—qualities that are crucial for developing a startup. His project Becoming X is also an inspiring initiative to overcome challenges faced by everyone.

If you’d get a chance to meet with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, what would you ask them?
Elon Musk is not someone I follow. However, if I had the opportunity to talk to the others, I would ask how they knew their companies were going to succeed and what their biggest regrets were.
