Over the past 6 months, the Ready2Scale Acceleration Program has supported 15 innovative digital and deep-tech startups, providing them with mentorship, resources, and a €60,000 grant to fuel their growth. Among these is Aisthesis Medical, a health tech startup dedicated to transforming sepsis management with cutting-edge AI technology. Let’s dive into their journey.
Aisthesis Medical develops VIOSync, an AI-powered clinical decision-support software system designed to predict and prevent sepsis by detecting early signs of patient deterioration. Founded by Ioannis Gkouzionis, Vasileios Dimakopoulos, and Sotirios Liliopoulos, the team combines expertise in biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and clinical research, driven by their shared mission to save lives through early detection and personalized care solutions.
How did you come up with the idea to create a startup?
The idea to create Aisthesis Medical came from both personal experiences and our combined technical and clinical backgrounds. Witnessing preventable deaths due to sepsis in hospitals underscored the need for proactive solutions, and we saw an opportunity to use AI to address this. Our personal encounters with sepsis—directly or through loved ones—fueled our resolve to develop VIOSync, empowering healthcare teams with life-saving predictive tools.
What have been the biggest challenges/failures and the biggest wins so far?
One of our biggest challenges has been navigating regulatory requirements for our AI-powered device while ensuring compliance without stalling our innovation. Securing partnerships with leading hospitals across Europe has been a significant win, as it has validated our technology and provided real-world clinical data. Additionally, receiving grants and support from health innovation bodies has accelerated our journey and brought us closer to widespread adoption.
What sets your startup apart from competitors?
VIOSync stands out by using digital patient twins and real-time data from various hospital sources to provide early, personalized predictions for sepsis. Unlike competitors, our solution integrates seamlessly across hospital departments, going beyond ICU monitoring to address high-risk patients in any care setting. With explainable AI, VIOSync gives clinicians the confidence to act on insights, making it both reliable and transparent.
Why would you recommend the Ready2Scale Acceleration Programme to other startups?
The Ready2Scale Acceleration Programme offers unmatched support and tailored guidance, helping startups refine their strategy and accelerate market entry. Through hands-on mentorship and networking opportunities, we gained invaluable insights that helped us enhance our product’s impact and visibility. It’s an ideal program for startups looking to solidify their footing and grow with expert support.
Where do you see your startup in 1 year? And where in 5 years?
In one year, we envision having completed clinical trials with VIOSync, earning regulatory approval, and beginning market entry across several European countries. In five years, we aim to be the leading AI provider in sepsis management, with VIOSync deployed across major hospitals worldwide. Our goal is to expand our product line to cover other critical care needs and build partnerships with key healthcare players for global reach.
Which books/podcasts/publications and influencers in your field do you follow and would recommend to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
We recommend “Deep Medicine” by Eric Topol for insights on AI in healthcare, “The Lean Startup” by Eric Ries for scaling principles, and Andreessen Horowitz’s “a16z” podcast for perspectives on technology and venture growth. Influencers like Andrew Ng and Eric Topol offer valuable viewpoints on machine learning and digital health.
If you’d get to meet with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, what would you ask them?
We’d ask them how they approach balancing rapid innovation with ethical responsibilities, especially in fields that impact people’s lives directly, like healthcare. Additionally, we’d seek their insights on overcoming early-stage funding and scaling challenges, and how to build resilient cultures that withstand high-growth pressures.
